Notes from the Chicago Obesity Summit:

Impact of Obesity Bias on healthcare. 70% of patients have experienced overweight/obesity bias by their own PHYSICIANS… they’re told that it’s a lack of motivation and determination so just “eat less and move more!” UGH, as if our patients haven’t already tried that approach… often for decades!

There are less than 10,000 board certified obesity medicine specialists in the United States and we have a population of over 200 million Americans who qualify for treatment and will benefit from effective treatments. We are working actively to help healthcare professionals (and your insurance companies!) to:

Appreciate the Complexity of Obesity managementRaise Awareness of implicit assumptions and beliefs related to weightAppreciate that shaming people does not motivate them, people benefit from expertise and supportAddress and validate the Stigma of weight biasAdvocate and Educate !

Treating overweight and obesity is SO FULFILLING and FUNDAMENTAL to the practice of preventive medicine.

We love to see our patients feeling better and lowering their risk of cancer, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease. We also get to see our patients fitting into their favorite clothes and not hesitating to take pictures with their family and friends.  We love to see the significant growth in one’s self confidence and achievement.  What a privilege to practice precision medicine! Thank you

Here is our pic at the 2024 Chicago Obesity Summit @ U Chicago Gleacher Center, we just heard an incredible lecture by Dr Kushner of NMH regarding the future of Anti-obesity medications. What a bright future it is!!

One of our PMC patients recently shared this commercial from Eli Lilly with me:

Ever body - no matter what size- deserves the right health care. Care without stigmas or bias. Care that isn't tainted by the shame imposed by others. Obesity is a matter of health. Shame has no place in it.

The messaging of this commercial has really resonated with this patient’s experience of losing over 100 pounds in the last 18 months. EVERY body is worthy of health care without stigma or shame.

The sooner you treat excess weight in the trajectory of one’s life, the sooner you liberate a person from the stress and stigma related to the shame and  bias of overweight/obesity.

It’s been a pretty stressful month when it comes to advocating for precision prescription therapies, too.

Many insurance companies that have previously approved prescriptions medications are now taking these medications off the insurance formularies our creating more barriers to prescription approvals. As a PMC membership patient, you can be confident that your precision medicine physicians will tirelessly appeal the denials of your insurance companies. We will advocate for your access to the most precision therapies for your health challenges. So it may take more time and resources to get your insurances to cover certain medications, thank you for your patience and support.

The Fulton market office is looking good and filling up nicely, please refer your city friends and family to see Dr Agarwal. She’s fully recovered from her recent vocal polyp surgery so we are making plans to start podcasting, too! We welcome our PMC patients to share their stories with us, too. We plan to highlight the impact of precision medicine to a larger audience that includes the perspectives of patients working with our clinical precisionists.

From the desk of Dr. Sadiq

This month marks my first at Precision Medical Care, and I must say, it has been highly rewarding. Joining this esteemed team has been an enriching experience. Each of us brings a wealth of information, and it has been truly delightful to collaborate with such a knowledgeable group. My background in internal medicine, endocrinology, and obesity has seamlessly integrated with the team's expertise, allowing us to provide comprehensive and cutting-edge care to our patients.

Life outside of work has been equally fulfilling. My two young girls keep me on my toes, making every day an adventure. We recently returned from a week-long vacation in Michigan, where we enjoyed lots of fun in the sun. It was a much-needed break, and spending quality time with my family was wonderful.

As we move into the next month, I’m eager to continue enhancing our patient care. I encourage you to stay connected with us through our blog and Instagram (@dr.ssadiq), where I share insights, tips, and the latest in endocrinology and wellness. Your journey to health is our top priority, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
